Energy Discharge or Pulse Capacitors provide a way of storing energy, which can be released as needed over short periods of time. They allow current pulses with rise times of less than 2 microseconds to be discharged into a variety of load configurations.  Pulsed power/pulsed discharge applications continue to rely upon NWL's expertise in providing practical reliable designs in science, research and industrial applications.

Product Summary:
Energy Discharge or Pulse Capacitors provide a way of storing energy, which can be released as needed over short periods of time. They allow current pulses with rise times of less than 2 microseconds.

Applications:
Typical applications for our pulse capacitors are particle acceleration equipment, x-ray systems, bio-medical applications, PFN's, flash tubes, industrial lasers, and cable fault detection equipment.

Specifications:
Capacitor Tolerance: Standard capacitor tolerance is ± 10%. Lower tolerances are available.

Operating Temperature:
Our standard capacitor is designed to operate between -40 °C to + 55 °C. Custom units available from -55 °C to +110 °C.

Dielectric Strength:
Tested between 120% and 200% of rated voltage for one minute depending on application.

Design Life:
Not less than 10 6 pulses. Typical is 10 8. Maximum of 10 11.

Repetition Rate:
Typical range- 0.5 to 100 pulses per second.

Peak Current:
Up to 100,000 amperes.

RMS Current:
Customer specified. Typical is up to 200 amperes.

% Voltage Reversal:
Up to 90% of rated voltage. Voltage Reversal parameters are critical in determining the design life and mechanical size of your capacitor.

Inductance:
Typical less than 100 nH. Available as low as 20 nH.

Voltages:
Up to 250 kVDC.

Dielectric Types:
Dry and oil filled constructions are available using a variety of dielectric materials- polypropylene, kraft and polyester with both foil and metalised electrodes.  In recent times the high energy density achieved from Metalised, segmented metalised paper and segmented metalised polypropylene has allowed designers to benefit from the higher energy density achieved from this construction.

Case Styles:
Low voltage applications use a wrap and filled format. High voltage applications use oval or rectangular drawn steel, welded steel, stainless steel, welded brass, or polypropylene
