NSRC Thyratron 1 High power switches such as ignitrons, thyratrons, and spark gaps require unique high power triggering systems. Our triggers can all operate from 5 mA/5 V sources and/or fiber optic inputs.

Thyratrons

The TT-G2 driver produces 2 - 2.5 kV (open circuit) positive pulses with 25 - 30 A typical output current. These devices are all tested by arcing a 20 kV pulse into the output in order to simulate anode fault currents.

Ignitrons

The IG5-F driver is designed to trigger all ignitrons presently available. It comes in a rugged package with isolation on the output of up to 25 kV for floating cathode applications. The unit can also be operated with power from an external resistor when required so that it can operate in a floating configuration.

IG5-F Ignitron Driver Specifications:

Open Circuit Voltage: 2 kV
Short Circuit Current: 400 A
Pulse Duration: 10 usec base width
Max Rep Rate: 2 Hz. (With AC drive)

Spark Gap Driver Systems

Our highly capable thyratron based drivers typically produce 100 - 200 kV pulses with 10 - 25 ns risetime. We have built units which range in capability from 10 Hz. - 1 kHz. SCR based trigger generators have also been built to 200 kV with longer risetimes.

 


Delay Generators

  Computer based time delay and fibre optic power supply controller system.

High power switches such as ignitrons, thyratrons, and spark gaps require unique high power triggering systems. Our triggers can all operate from 5 mA/5 V sources and/or fiber optic inputs.

North Star's computer based time delay system consists of a National Instruments' timing board, a fiber optic interface board, software, and various output boards. A variety of relatively delayed pulses, a burst, and a "Count Down" feature for every Nth pulse are available. Frequency outputs for use with V/F converters are also provided. Used properly this device functions as a combination of a powerful time delay generator, and a fiber optic isolated computer control system. This software has also been used to control HV power supplies such as those manufactured by Lambda/EMI.
